The increase in quality care and feeds for our equine friends have allowed them to live a longer healthier life. In an effort to provide better care we should adjust our wellness and preventative health schedule. A ‘Geriatric Profile’ is recommended as a preventative measure for the early detection and implementation of a medical management plan for the changes associated with the aging process in older horses. Early identification of these changes, along with proper veterinary management, will extend the healthy and happy life span of your aging friend. We recommend various procedures and blood tests for our geriatric patients in order to help us identify any underlying diseases such as Pituitary Adenoma (Cushing’s disease), Metabolic Syndrome, Liver or Kidney abnormalities, as well as any underlying infectious issues.
Recommended procedures for our geriatric patients include:
- Detailed Physical Exam
- Oral/ Dental Exam and floating if needed
- Nutritional Consultation
- Blood tests:
- Complete blood count
- Chemistry profile
- Thyroid Level
- ACTH (to identify Cushing's)
