Green Glen Equine Hospital is one of the few equine practices in the area to offer Shockwave therapy. Shockwave therapy is used as a treatment method for orthopedic problems. Shockwaves are high frequency sound waves focused into tissue using a hand-held probe to stimulate the cells in that area and promote healing without negative side effects or long term rehabilitation.
It has been shown to be an effective therapy for troublesome lameness issues such as:
- navicular disease
- suspensory desmitis
- bucked shins
- hock spavin
- sesamoid and carpal fractures
- back or spine problems.
The first reported use of shockwaves for medical therapy in human medicine dates back 20 years ago when it was used for the disintegration of kidney stones. The positive results in human medicine encouraged the development of shockwave units for equine applications. One of the first units was developed in Europe. Shockwave therapy became extensively used and in recent years made its way to the States.
The shockwave unit is available at the hospital or at your farm. Please contact our office at 717-235-4312 for more information on scheduling a shockwave session for your horse.
